I went back and forth on this, but I decided to go with my opinion of the “best film” of a particular year. This is why Return of the Jedi and Temple of Doom didn’t make my list the last two years.

My Pick for Best Film of 1984: This is Spinal Tap!
This is Spinal Tap might be my favorite comedy of all time. I probably watch it every year and each year, I find something else in the movie that makes me laugh. If you’ve never seen it, you are doing it wrong.
