Guns, Roses, Klosterman & Memories

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

Appetite for DestructionThis week I read Chuck Klosterman’s Fargo Rock City.  The book is part memoir, part analysis of 80s glam rock.  It begins with Motley Crue’s Shout at the Devil and hits it’s climax at Guns N’ Roses Appetite for Destruction.

First off, I absolutely adored this book.  Within 50 pages I realized that I wanted to read everything Klosterman writes.  By the end of the book, I was more interested in glam rock than I had ever thought possible.

The album that Klosterman probably spends the most time talking about is Appetite for Destruction.  Now, I’m extremely familiar with Appetite for Destruction.  The album cover is burned into my brain as are the three big hits from that album – Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City & Sweet Child O’ Mine.  If you had asked me if I owned that album, I would have quickly said yes.  The problem is I didn’t own it nor had I ever.  I never owned it on tape, cd (burned or otherwise) or had a copy digitally.

After finishing Fargo Rock City, I went out and finally bought my very own copy of Appetite for Destruction.  I’ve spent the past few days listening to it over and over again and I have to admit that it’s even better than advertised.  There are a handful of songs that are as good as the singles and more importantly, there isn’t any filler on the album – every song rocks.

Still, I’m fascinated that I had been so familiar with an album I didn’t even own.  Obviously it was a big seller, but I was only four years old when it was released so I don’t think I could have been influenced that much by the sales.  After some though, I realized that I have some distinct memories that are specifically tied to that album.

GNR Memory 1

Growing up in Spooner, WI there was a bowling alley in town.  Occasionally I’d go to this bowling alley with friends, but we also went there for gym class for a week.  There wasn’t anything that stood out about this bowling alley (outside of it being the only one within 15 miles), but I distinctly remember there being a Guns N’ Roses pinball machine located between the bowling alley and bar area.

In fact, I remember this pinball machine so well that I’m starting to question it’s actual existence.  There are times that I find my memories conflicting with fact and I’m afraid that this might be another example of this occurring.

GNR Memory 2

When I was in high school, I took an Honors English 2 class my junior year.  At the time, I was starting to become friends with a quiet kid named Zach.  I was just beginning to get to know him because he had gone to Catholic school up until our freshman year.  I knew that he was nice and had a sense of humor that seemed to come out of nowhere.  Still, I didn’t expect he would do what he did one day in Honors English 2.

We were asked to bring in a poem that we liked and read it to the class.  This poem request was rather liberal since we were allowed to bring in song lyrics (which looking back on it, seems silly).  We were supposed to bring our poem in front of the class, read it and explain to the class why it meant something to us.

Zach quietly came up to the front of the class and proceded to read the lyrics to Welcome to the Jungle.  The brilliant part of this reading was threefold.  First off, he didn’t tell anyone he was doing it.  Often great ideas are too difficult to keep secret and are often spoiled with anticipation.  Second off, he read the entire thing without cracking a smile.  Some of the class was laughing so hard that my friend Josh and I literally fell out of our chairs laughing.  Finally, Zach read off the entire lyrics, including pronouncing every single na in the “Watch it bring you to your shun na,na,na,na,na,na,na knees, knees” line.  Quite honestly, it was the single funniest comedic moment I’ve ever experienced in my life.

GNR Moment 3

When Molly and I first started dating, I remember having a fight that I honestly thought was going to be the beginning of the end of our relationship.  She was listening to Sheryl Crow’s version of Sweet Child O’ Mine and I remember mentioning how she should stop wasting her time with that version and just listen to the original Guns N’ Roses version.  She defended the Crow version and even argued that it was better than the GNR original.  I remember that this made me so mad because I could not comprehend such faulty thinking.  I remember thinking, “if she can make such a mistake on something as obvious as this, what else is she wrong on?”

I’m happy to say that she has moved on and recanted such a silly statement.  I also admit that it’s ridiculous to think that a difference in a matter of opinion could shake me so much.  Still, it’s honestly the biggest argument I have had with her that I can remember so clearly  - even though it happened 7 years ago.

In conclusion, I’m fascinated by Chuck Klosterman.  I’m really digging Appetite for Destruction and I’m amazed that I could have so many memories and strong feelings about an album that I had never owned until a few days ago.

DPOY: Woodson vs Revis

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Yesterday, the NFL announced that Charles Woodson won Defensive Player of the Year. Most football fans agreed that the Defensive Player of the Year was going to be either Charles Woodson or Darrelle Revis, both cornerbacks.

Charles Woodson

Jets coach, Rex Ryan, obviously disagreed with the voting when he said, “This, in my opinion, was the best year a corner has ever had, the most impact a corner has ever had in the National Football League. That’s my opinion. Apparently, that wasn’t how everybody felt.”

Counting Stats

So, who really deserved the award?  First, the counting stats.

Charles Woodson

74 Tackles
2 Sacks
4 Forced Fumbles
1 Fumbles Recovered

9 Interceptions
18 Passes Defensed
3 TDs

Darrelle Revis

54 Tackles
0 Sacks
0 Forced Fumbles
0 Fumbles Recovered

6 Interceptions
31 Passes Defensed
1 TDs

A quick look at the normal counting stats seems to agree with the voters choice of Woodson for DPOY. He has two more sacks, four more forced fumbles, three more interceptions and two more Touchdowns. The one stat that Revis leads Woodson in is passes defensed.

Revis fans claim that Passes Defensed tells more of the story. They’ll normally cite the following quote from Peter King on Twitter, “revis played 9 games this year mostly isolated on players who have made at least 1 pro bowl. none had more than 35 receiving yards.”

Coverage

Using Pro Football Focus, lets look at both Charles Woodson & Darrelle Revis in coverage.

Charles Woodson

76 Thrown At
39 Receptions
51.3 Completion %

8 Penalties

448 Yards
11.5 Average
172 Yards After Catch
5 TDs

51.8 NFL Rating

Darrelle Revis

111 Thrown At
41 Receptions
36.9 Completion %

4 Penalties

425 Yards
10.4 Average
145 Yards After Catch
2 TDs

32.3 NFL Rating

These numbers seem to support the idea that Revis is a better shutdown corner. This season, Quarterbacks threw at Revis more than Woodson and he responded by holding them to a 36.9 Completion % and a 32.3 QB Rating, while drawing less flags. Woodson’s numbers are nothing to scoff at, Pro Football Focus had him as the #2 coverage corner in the NFL, but Revis clearly had a better season in coverage.

Run Defense

Although not as important as coverage, lets use Pro Football Focus again to look at Woodson & Revis in run coverage. I’ll use their Stops statistic, which is defined as “Cumulative number of solo defensive tackles made which constitute an offensive failure (including sacks).

Charles Woodson

69 Tackles
4 Assists
8 Missed Tackles

37 Stops

Darrelle Revis

47 Tackles
4 Assists
5 Missed Tackles

14 Stops

These numbers give the edge to Woodson against the run game. According to Pro Football Focus, Woodson is the best NFL cornerback against the run and it isn’t even close. His 37 Stops is number on in the NFL among Cornerbacks. Pro Football Focus gives Woodson a score of +15 against the Run, second best is Antoine Winfield at +6.8 (Revis is at +0.4).

Rushing the Quarterback

Of all the jobs of a Cornerback, this is definitely the least important. Once again, lets use Pro Football Focus to see who was best at pressuring the opposing team’s quarterback.

Charles Woodson

6 Quarterback Pressures
2 Quarterback Hits
2 Quarterback Sacks

Darrelle Revis

0 Quarterback Pressures
0 Quarterback Hits
0 Quarterback Sacks

It looks like the Jets rarely, if ever, sent Revis on a blitz. Woodson on the other hand plays in a 3-4 and occasionally blitzed the quarterback. Obviously each cornerback plays in a different defensive scheme, but this edge clearly goes to Woodson. Pro Football Focus had him as the 3rd best cornerback at rushing the quarterback (behind Brandon McDonald and Brandon Flowers).

Conclusion

Both cornerbacks had incredible seasons. Since 1981, only two other cornerbacks have ever won the award (Rod Woodson in 1993 & Deion Sanders in 1994). The fact that this award was between two cornerbacks speaks volumes about the seasons they both had.

My take is that Darrelle Revis had one of the greatest seasons a shutdown cornerback could ever have in the NFL.  The Jets put him out on an island and asked him to shut down the opposing teams’ best wide receiver – and he did.  Most years he would clearly be the best cornerback in the NFL – and frontrunner for Defensive Player of the Year.

While Revis is the best coverage corner in the NFL, I believe Charles Woodson is the best all around cornerback.  He was the best cornerback in the NFL against the run and one of the best in coverage and pressuring the quarterback.  He forced 13 turnovers (7 more than Revis) and scored 3 touchdowns (2 more than Revis).  Revis had a great year, but Woodson was even better.

Top 5 Patton Oswalt Bits

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

Later next month, I am going to see Patton Oswalt live.  In celebration of this grand event, I present to you 5 of my favorite Patton Oswalt jokes.

5. Tivo

I think this is a pretty great, short introduction to Patton Oswalt. It’s off his first album, Feelin’ Kinda Patton, and includes excellent analogies for his new favorite invention. Grape Job!

4. Rats & Orgy

This is actually two different bits from his new album, My Weakness is Strong, but it’s all in one video and they segway nicely into each other. This is pretty amazing since one is about Rats and the other is about an Orgy. The description of the appearance of the rat and what happens to it is incredible. Ditto for the realization and explanation of social protocols in the Orgy.

3. At Midnight I will Kill George Lucas with a Shovel

Off of my favorite Patton Oswalt album, Werewolves and Lollipops, this is actually the first Oswalt joke I ever heard. If you have any anger about the Star Wars prequels, then you will love this video. You will also never view Angelina Jolie the same.

2. Sky Cake

Also off of My Weakness is Strong, Sky Cake might be my favorite explanation for the origin of religion. I’ll probably use this argument next time I find myself in a theological debate.

1. America has Spoken

Off of Werewolves and Lollipops, America has Spoken is probably the most famouse Patton Oswalt bit. Someone is finally able to put in to words the feelings most of us have about KFC’s Famous Bowls.

It appears that most of my content is being accessed via search engine and referrals.  Also, writing about a variety of topics has actually worked out well for me.  I have a list of blog topics that I plan on writing about in the upcoming months.  I also plan on increasing the frequency of posting (I’d like to average two posts a week) and I’ll probably redesign the blog in the next few months.

So, thanks for all of you who have visited my site in the past year.  I hope you continue to find value here and feel free to leave any comments/suggestions below.

Also, don’t forget to fan rmlumley.com on facebook.
