Favorite Game of 2008?

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Left 4 DeadI know I’ve done a Top 5 albums of 2008 post, but I haven’t written one for Film or Video Games yet because there are still a few things I need to see/play. Still, I can safely say that Left 4 Dead is my favorite video game of 2008. It’s a game that I normally play 1-2 hours every night before I go to bed.

For those of you unfamiliar, Left 4 Dead is a 4 player co-op game that revolves around a Zombie Apocalypse scenario. The game consists of 4 campaigns (each roughly 1 hour long) that you play thru along with 3 other players online. At first glance, this sounds like something that would get old quick. That’s not the case, instead, it’s one of the most re-playable games I’ve ever experienced.

First off, the game has an AI system called The Director. This Director tweaks and adapts the game depending on how you are playing. This means every play thru is different. While the maps in the Campaign remain the same, the location and type of Zombies changes as do the weapon and health placement. As it is, I’ve probably played thru each campaign 20-30 times.

Left 4 Dead also has the best co-op gameplay available. It’s a game where Teamwork is so important and the design of the game reflects this concept. Along with the hordes of zombies, there are special infected that enforce teamwork in different ways. The Hunter will pin down a team member that decides to go off on his own. He’ll stay pinned until another teammate shoots the Hunter off. The Smoker grabs and drags a teammate away, attempting to break up a close knit team. The Boomer will vomit resulting in a horde attack. If you shoot him when he is too close, he explodes resulting in a horde attack. The point of the Boomer is to prevent the idea of “shoot anything that moves”. Finally, the Tank is a huge steroided up Zombie that requires the entire team to take down.

The end result is a game that is great to play with three friends and never gets old.

Iconolike – March 2009

March Iconolike

Well, it appears that people liked the original Iconolike.   I created one that should reflect what I’ve been up to in the past 30 days or so.  This one is smaller than the original, so future Iconolikes will probably remain 16 images (instead of 25).  I’ll try to create a new one every month, but I also might do one based around a particular topic (ie. Video Game Iconolike).

Now, see if you can guess what each thumbnail in the March iconolike represents.  Post your guesses in the comments.

Sweet 16: Day 1

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Well, my bracket is in awful shape. I’m missing 3 of my Elite 8, but my Final Four is still intact. So, lets look at Today’s games.

UConn over Purdue.
I’m really rooting for the Big Ten in this one, but I think UConn will be too much. Robbie Hummel is really good though, so maybe he can carry them into the Final Four.

Pittsburgh over Xavier.
I picked Pitt, but I’m going to root for Xavier. They really impressed me in their win over Wisconsin. Normally, I instantly hate any team that defeats Wisconsin in the tournament, but Xavier remains likable.

VIllanova over Duke
First off, I hate Duke. I also watched Villanova absolutely destroy a UCLA team I picked to go into the Elite 8. I think Nova was the benefit of home court and some questionable calls, but they still dominated.

Memphis over Missouri
Even though I’m a Wisconsin resident, I’m not much of a Marquette fan. I find it fitting that they lost to Missouri because of a sloppy turnover. Missouri is similar to Xavier in how solid they are. Memphis is my championship pick, so I’m going to have to take them in this.

NCAA Tournament Day 4

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

Well, even though I hit 7 of 8 picks, the one I missed was yet another Elite 8 team. Thanks a lot UCLA. This means that I only have one unconventional Elite 8 pick still alive (Arizona State). If they lose, I think my chance of having a winning bracket is gone.

Today’s picks:
Arizona State over Syracuse
Xavier over Wisconsin (I hope I’m wrong)
Kansas over Dayton (I originally had West Virginia in this)
Arizona over Cleveland State (I originally had Wake Forest)
Pitt over Oklahoma State
Missouri over Marquette
Michigan St over USC
Louisville over Siena

NCAA Tournament Day 3

Saturday, March 21st, 2009

I was correct in only 11 of 16 games, and I lost two Sweet 16 teams in West Virginia & Wake Forest. The West Virginia loss really hurts since I had them going to the Elite 8. As long as my other two 6 seeds (UCLA & ASU) make it to the Elite 8, I’ll be fine.

Outside of the poor day I had with my bracket, I am absolutely ecstatic over the Wisconsin win. That layup with 2 seconds left that Hughes hit needs to be talked about more. That was a tough, tough shot. I thought the game was over when they were down 31-19 at the half, but they came back strong in the 2nd half with unexpected production from Keaton Nankivil. Xavier is going to be tough, but I think Wisconsin matches up well. More importantly, the Badgers actually came thru in a close game this season.

Alright, my picks are below:

UCLA over Villanova
Memphis over Maryland
UConn over Texas A&M
Purdue over Washington
UNC over LSU
Oklahoma over Michigan
Gonzaga over Western Kentucky
Duke over Texas

I’m really looking forward to the UCLA/Villanova game.
